What is Search Visibility?
Search visibility is a metric that measures how likely users are to see a website in search results, usually organic (non-paid) results, for a set of keywords. Rank-tracking tools express it as a percentage: rankings weighted by each position’s expected click-through rate, where 100% means ranking first for every tracked keyword. Higher visibility generally means more organic search traffic.
More About Search Visibility
Search visibility rises and falls with your keyword rankings. Rank-tracking tools calculate the score from where your pages rank in organic search for a tracked set of keywords, so it climbs when rankings improve and falls when they slip. Search engines rank the pages they judge most relevant to a query, which is why visibility shifts when algorithm updates change those judgments. Sites penalized for black hat tactics can lose visibility outright: a manual action can remove some or all of a site from Google's results.
How search visibility is measured
Rank-tracking tools report search visibility as a percentage score, not a count of visits. The score takes your rankings across a tracked set of keywords and weights each one by the click-through rate (CTR) the tool expects at that position, because a #1 result attracts a far larger share of clicks than a #40 result. In Semrush's Position Tracking model, 100% visibility means ranking first for every keyword in the campaign, 0% means ranking for none of them, and the score falls as your ranking pages drop down Google's top 100. Moz Pro tracks its own Search Visibility score for the keywords in a campaign.
The CTR in that formula is modeled, not measured. A sharper title or a rich result earned through schema markup can raise the clicks you actually get from a position you already hold, and that lifts traffic. It won't move a position-based visibility score unless your rankings change. The score answers one narrow question: how findable are you, given where you rank?
Traffic from organic search is different again. It counts the visits you actually receive, and it shows up in your analytics after visibility does its work.
Search visibility vs. rankings vs. traffic
The 3 metrics answer different questions:
- Ranking: your position in search results for one keyword at one moment.
- Search visibility: your aggregate share of potential exposure and clicks across every keyword you track.
- Traffic: the visits your site actually receives from organic search.
Visibility catches what average position hides. Semrush's documentation gives an example of 2 sites that each track 2 keywords: one ranks #1 and #100, the other #50 and #50. Both have an average position of 50. The first site is still far more visible, because its #1 ranking captures a large share of clicks while positions 50 and 100 capture almost none. That gap is why visibility, not average position, is the better measure of a campaign's overall progress.
How to check your search visibility
Start with Google Search Console. It's free and first-party: the Performance report shows clicks, impressions, average CTR, and average position for your site in Google's results, and our guide to Google Search Console walks through the setup. If your property is in the gradual rollout, the newer Generative AI performance report (launched June 3, 2026) adds a dedicated view of the impressions your pages earn inside AI Overviews and AI Mode. For a visibility score, add your target keywords to a rank tracker such as Semrush Position Tracking or Moz Pro and benchmark yourself against competitors on the same keyword set. Then watch the trend line rather than any single number. A sudden drop is often the first sign that an algorithm update or a penalty has hit, and catching it early gives you time to diagnose the cause.
How to improve search visibility
A visibility score is built on rankings, so the levers that raise it are the ones that move rankings:
- Improve rankings for the keywords you already track. Better content and stronger on-page SEO push pages up the results, and every position gained earns a larger modeled share of clicks.
- Fix crawl and indexing problems. A page search engines can't crawl or index ranks for nothing, so restoring pages that dropped out of the index restores the visibility they carried.
- Keep your tracked keyword set stable. Adding or removing keywords changes what the score measures, not how you perform. Track new targets deliberately, and expect the percentage to dip until rankings for them catch up.
Titles, meta descriptions, and structured data mostly work on a different number: they can lift the clicks you earn from the positions you already hold, which raises traffic without moving a modeled visibility score. They're worth doing, just measure them in CTR and visits. For the full playbook, see our guide to 21 SEO techniques that still work in the AI era.
Frequently Asked Questions
- There's no universal benchmark: the score is relative to the keywords you track. In Semrush's model, 100% means ranking first for every keyword in your campaign. Compare yourself against competitors tracked on the same keyword set, and watch the trend over time rather than chasing an absolute number.
- Standard visibility scores don't. Search Console's Generative AI performance report, launched June 3, 2026 and still rolling out to a subset of site owners, shows impressions (not clicks or position) for AI Overviews and AI Mode. As of August 2026, Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit tracks brand appearances in AI-generated answers.
- No. Search Console counts an impression when a link to your site appears in a searcher's results page, even when it isn't scrolled into view (independently scrolling widgets differ). A visibility score is a modeled percentage that weights your rankings by expected click-through rate for a fixed keyword set.
- Common causes: an algorithm update reshuffled rankings, competitors overtook you, pages fell out of Google's index, or a manual action removed them from results. Check Search Console's Manual actions report and page indexing first, then compare your keyword rankings around the drop date.
